Hawaiian lomi massage is a unique healing massage that has been handed down through Hawaiian families from generation to generation. Based upon the ideology that all parts of the body - the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual - are all interconnected, lomi massage works to improve the long-term health of its receiver by addressing specific physical ailments as well as reducing overall stress that can lead to injuries and other chronic health issues.

While other forms of massage such as Shiatsu or Swedish massage focus on relaxation techniques designed to provide a sense of well-being, lomi massage is a rhythmical massage that works gently but deeply into the muscles to release tension and bring a free energy flow to specific ailments or throughout the entire body. The result is a therapeutic massage that helps heal injuries, alleviate pain and provide health benefits that last long after the actual physical massage is finished.

Hawaiian Lomi Massage Chairs™ are much more than simply robotic furniture! Unlike other massage chairs that may feel nice but offer little if any therapeutic value, Hawaiian Lomi Massage Chairs™ are designed with healing in mind.

The original Hawaiian Lomi Massage Chair™ was designed under the supervision of a Hawaiian Lomi massage master known as a Kahuna. Our intention was to develop a new category of massage chairs - one that incorporates design features and technologies that replicate the deep-tissue, rhythmical motions attributed to the healing nature of lomi massage.

Our chairs offer true, deep-tissue massage. They are able to deliver real therapeutic massage because of the three dimensional, roller disc system used in the mechanism. What this means is that the unique design of the mechanism allows it to replicate the in-out, up-down, and side-to-side movements of human massage as opposed to most chairs which only offer two-dimensional massage.

This type of real therapeutic massage may help to alleviate symptoms of high blood pressure, fibromyalgia, arthritis, sports injuries, stress, chronic back pain, sleeplessness, diabetic neuropathy, bursitis, and more.

Hawaiian lomi practitioners were some of the first to understand the connection between mental and physical health. With the knowledge that mental thoughts can cause health problems as much as muscle tension can, they developed a massage that addresses both the mental and physical aspects of healing. Through this holistic approach to massage, lomi addresses all aspects of the receiver and allows powerful healing to take place more quickly and completely.

Also known as "Loving Hands" massage, Hawaiian lomi massage is a deep rhythmical massage. The practitioner uses fluid wave-like motions that are intended to restore balance to the body, mind and soul of the recipient. Lomi massage may incorporate a variety of touching techniques from long smooth strokes to short invigorating pulses. The master masseuse may work on the entire body or isolated areas of concern. Also, instead of the traditional massage technique that is applied with the fingers and hands, lomi uses the more blunt pressure of the palms, fists, elbows, forearms and even the feet.

Another difference of Hawaiian lomi massage is that different parts of the body may be massaged at the same time. In fact, it is not uncommon for two or more masseuses to work simultaneously on a single individual. This is one technique used by the lomi practitioner to totally relax the recipient, as it is difficult if not impossible for an individual to concentrate on several physical areas at once.

According to Hawaiian beliefs, unwanted energy may also get blocked in joints. The lomi massage therefore also incorporates movements that gently stretch the body and rotates the joints. This assists in the release of tensions and facilitates the healing process.

A Hawaiian lomi massage may be slow and soothing or faster and more invigorating depending upon the specific health concerns of the recipient. As trapped energy is released, receivers often experience an emotional release providing evidence of deeper healing and the connectivity between the mental and physical aspects of overall health.

Lomi massage is an ancient Hawaiian healing practice that has been handed down from family to family for hundreds of years. In the 1800's, Hawaiian masters of the lomi massage, known as Kahuna lomilomi, openly practiced this art as a healing technique that was both physical and spiritual. There are numerous first hand accounts from European explorers that describe instances of receiving relaxing and therapeutic lomi massages from the Hawaiian Kahuna during their visits to the islands.

In the 1820s, Western missionaries to the Hawaiian Islands found the Hawaiian Kahuna to be particularly gifted in their ability to diagnose and treat illnesses and injuries. Still, massage and other native practices were considered by the Western missionaries to be heathenistic and in 1893, the government outlawed all spiritual traditions - including lomi massage.

Instead of abandoning their traditions and beliefs, however, the Hawaiian people continued to practice their way of life in secrecy. And though hidden, lomi massage continued to flourish within the Hawaiian community, being taught and passed down from generation to generation.

Amazingly, it wasn't until the 1970s that laws were changed that allowed Hawaiians to once again openly practice their traditional way of life. This change sparked a resurgence in interest in the ancient customs of the Hawaiian people. Family elders were sought out as sources of information regarding these old traditions.

In 1973, "Auntie" Margaret Machado, a highly respected elder and practitioner of lomi massage decided to share her family secrets with all who were interested. She became the only authentic, Hawaiian Kahunu lomilomi licensed by the state of Hawaii to train therapists under state requirements. Now retired, "Auntie" Margaret's family continues to pass on this ancient tradition to the scores of students that come to the big island to learn this ancient massage technique.

The Hawaiian Lomi Group, under the direction of then company president, Benson Medina began working on the design of a massage chair that would closely duplicate the unique rhythmic massage patterns used in lomi massage. Medina, a native Hawaiian, learned lomi massage first-hand from his maternal grandmother, Emily Ka'ahanui, a lomi massage master. The result was a next-generation massage chair - one designed to go beyond "fun furniture" categorized by other massage chairs on the market. The Hawaiian Lomi Massage Chair™ incorporates the deep tissue, multiple stimulation massage techniques used by the Hawaiian Kahuna to offer an experience that is therapeutic as well as relaxing.
